70 years of bold change

It’s our 70th anniversary! To celebrate, we’re not just reminiscing about our past, we’re focusing on our future.

It’s our 70th anniversary! To celebrate, we’re not just reminiscing about our past, we’re focusing on our future.

Parking lot full of Volkswagen vehicles

Like how we changed the face of driving in Canada after arriving in 1952. When every other car focused on being the biggest on the block, we kept our vehicles small, colourful, and – most importantly – fun.

There was the Canadian introduction of the Beetle in 1952, a vehicle that truly looked like no other. But its unorthodox size and style didn’t stop us from making it the third best-selling car in Canada by 1960.

Let’s not forget how we were at the centre of hippie culture. By daring to be different, we built a community of people who do the same, and became a symbol of freedom everywhere.

Or how when other automakers were trying to reimagine the muscle car in the ‘70s, we decided to reimagine the hatchback instead – by giving it more power and making the world’s first-ever hot hatch: the Golf GTI.

But that’s enough about the past. This anniversary, we’re looking ahead. Because as much as we’re proud of yesterday, we’re even more excited about tomorrow.

Here, we’ll show you.

Being the change

“Be the Change” is everything we stand for. It’s about doing good for the greater, building a new era of sustainability, and bringing change to our communities. It’s been the driving force for everything we do, and what we’ll continue to do in the future. We have a lot of exciting things planned on our ongoing mission to “Be the Change,” and we hope you’ll join us.

Making Electric for Everyone

Making Electric for Everyone

Yellow ID. Buzz drivimg down highway road

We’re headed towards a brighter electric future, and we know the only way to achieve it is to make electric vehicles accessible to all.

We’ve already started introducing the ID. family, our ongoing line of electric vehicles made approachable through iconic design and economical starting costs. There’s the ID.4, an SUV that makes electric look as good as it feels. And the ID. Buzz, an electric reimagining of our iconic bus, designed with a literal smile. The ID.4 is just now making its way to Canada, and the ID. Buzz will be arriving in 2024 – so we’ve got some exciting (and electrifying) years ahead of us! We’re also planning to have over 70 EV models worldwide by 2030, and a fully electric fleet by 2040. All on our way to make electric for everyone.

Celebrating our community

All year long, we're showcasing 70 years worth of VW memories shared by our staff, Dealers, and Owners. Post your own Volkswagen memories on Instagram with #VW70 and we'll share our favourites on our feed at @VWCanada.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’re so proud of the past 70 years, but we’re even more excited for the next 70 years to come – and for you to come along for the ride!
