How do you choose a car for teenagers and recent grads? It’s a question many parents consider, especially this time of year, as a new class of students graduate from high school, on the road to college and university – and in need of wheels of their own.

So, what makes a great car for young drivers? It comes down to safety, reliability, cost, and connectivity.

Safety first

It goes without saying, but the first consideration when choosing a car for teen drivers is safety. While it’s always tempting to purchase or pass down a well-used, older car, that’s not necessarily the smartest choice, especially when you consider many new models offer advanced safety features for a more confident and more reliable ride.

For example, every new Volkswagen comes equipped with a rearview camera and post-collision braking. With post-collision braking, if the system detects an impact, the brakes are automatically applied to help prevent another collision. Likewise, many models offer a suite of advanced safety features, ranging from Blind Spot Detection* – which is designed to help ensure the driver doesn’t change lanes when there’s another vehicle in close proximity – to Lane Assist,* which helps keep you in your lane if it detects the vehicle begin to drift too far to the left or right.

Well connected

Find us a teen who doesn’t care about their smartphone. Seamless, simple smartphone connectivity is essential when it comes to young drivers to help avoid distractions. Teenagers expect to use their phone wherever they go, and in a car that includes using their device’s apps for hands-free calls, navigation, media and music.

Volkswagen goes beyond Bluetooth® technology. Standard in every model, VW App-Connect** lets you control your apps with your voice or right from the infotainment screen. Better still, it’s compatible with Apple CarPlay® for iPhone® or Android Auto™ for Android™.

Cost considerations

The final consideration for choosing a car for your new grad is cost. More than sticker price, cost is related to reliability and total cost of ownership. The more reliable the car, the less likely you and your teen will incur unexpected costs.

Warranty is another consideration. Volkswagen offers a four-year/80,000 km† new-vehicle limited warranty, with wear-and-tear items and adjustments excluded after the first 12 months/20,000 km.†

Of course, it pays to shop around for deals. Speaking of which, Volkswagen offers a special Graduate Program specifically designed for young drivers. If you are a recent graduate and you finance or lease a new or Certified Pre-Owned VW, you can receive a rebate of up to $500.
