More to the Touareg than just fuel efficiency

Touareg may be slightly awkward to pronounce and a little tricky to spell, but there's nothing unclear about the messages the 2012 turbo-diesel version of Volkswagen's luxury mid-size SUV transmits.

Diesel SUV a happy high way hauler

Ottawa to St. Petersburg, Fla. is 2,345 kilometres, a distance so vast that driving there makes about as much sense as a manned mission to Mars.

Test Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Touareg TDI

Nine litres per 100 kilometres… That may not seem like such a great fuel consumption number in its own right, but the 2012 Volkswagen Touarag TDI is a full-size, 2,137-kg SUV, and 9.0 L/100 km is impressive, indeed. For a bit of perspective, I got 13.9 in an Acura MDX (2,109 kg), 13.6 in a Ford Explorer V6 (2,146 kg) and 12.9 in a Mazda CX-9 (2,068 kg) recently.

Why buy hybrid when you could have diesel instead?

A week testing Volkswagen’s Touareg TDI diesel SUV reminded me of how utterly misguided and wasteful our politicians can be. You see, fuel-efficient diesel engines in Canada do not receive a penny in government subsidies. Ridiculous.

Touareg keeps working for the title

Sport utility vehicles simply don’t get much better than the Volkswagen Touareg, and if you don’t believe me, believe the numerous AJAC journalists who voted Touareg the best SUV in its category for three years running at the Canadian Car of the Year awards.

    2011 Volkswagen Touareg 3.6L V6

Truth be told, my expectations for the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg 3.6L V6 were kept in check. Having tested numerous Porsche Cayenne SUVs over the past few years, with high praise for each of them, I went into this weeklong test thinking ‘poor man’s Cayenne.’ More ‘people’s car’ and less ‘german perfection.’

2011 Volkswagen Touareg V6 Exceline Review and Road Test

Since we liked the Touareg so much the last time we drove it, we decided to try the gasoline powertrain this time around. It comes as no surprise that much like the diesel version we tested, this one checks off all the important boxes: Great ride, crisp handling, luxurious interior appointments and driving dynamics that are the envy of the entire SUV community.

Driven: 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel

All it took was one drive of the new Touareg TDI to bump our relatively uneducated opinion of diesel vehicles from ‘I think they’re ok’ to ‘Wow, I would buy one of these!’ When most people think of diesel cars, images of rusty old beaters spewing dark clouds of smelly emissions pop into their heads, and sure, this was the state of diesel ten or twenty years ago, but today’s oil-burning cars and light trucks are much cleaner, and quieter, than you’d ever imagine.
