    The Order Guide: 2012 Beetle

Whatever you do, don’t call it the New Beetle. Don’t even call it the New New Beetle. It’s just the Beetle. This is the second generation of Beetle since Volkswagen brought back the iconic shape in 1998, and VW has decided it’s time to lose the New. Which is good, because the new Beetle is much better than the old New Beetle.

Not many bugs in new gen Volkswagen Beetle

One of my earliest recollections of the Volkswagen Beetle is of how roomy it was. I must have been about nine or ten, and there were four of us crammed in the car’s back seat (two kids), though we didn’t seem all that cramped.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Premiere+ quick spin

It's Volkswagen's icon, of course, re-imagined again with a more contemporary look. Actually, that's only partly true, as the semi-futuristic look of the New Beetle has been ditched for a style that's decidedly retro, and closer to the 1940s original.

    Bug goes sporty

What do you call the new Beetle when the old Beetle is also called the New Beetle? Maybe it should be the “Newer Beetle”; or perhaps the “Brand New Beetle”. In any case, VW doesn’t listen to me and decided to go with ... the 2012 Beetle.

Redesigned Volkswagen Beetle has swagger yet pays homage to original

In 1998, Volkswagen relaunched a car that had become a legend since the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Beetle first rolled out of a German factory 50 years earlier. The New Beetle wasn't a rear-engined, air-cooled car like the original, which had sold a whopping 21 million units from 1938 until 2003 when production ended in Mexico following a huge drop in demand.

    A more masculine Beetle

My youngest daughter has been a Volkswagen Beetle fan since she was very young and upon seeing my 2012 Beetle test car, mentioned how this new model is now “very masculine looking.” Even she knows the new Beetle has been transformed from the cutesy, retro design which debuted in 1998 into something a little more aggressive. Baby boomers really took to the 98 Beetle when it debuted.

Less buggy Beetle still chirps a happy tune

It’s been perhaps the most iconic and brand-identifiable car in history, and for 2012 Volkswagen’s Beetle gets tweaks to its body shape that tone it down a bit, but stays recognizable.

    Mission Impossible: 14 errands

The mission will be difficult. The sun is going down and traffic is heavy. I have a 40-minute window to get to my destination. This isn't some dangerous drive through the deserts and mountains of Pakistan, striving to get past the Tata trucks, through the border post into India at Amritsar before it closes.

    2012 Volkswagen Beetle Premiere+ Review

That's basically the simplest way to sum up the new New, newest, uh, latest Volkswagen Beetle. It actually sparked my intrigue at one point when I asked around about girlie cars and came up with a few stats. Essentially, the Beetle was the “girliest” amongst chick cars.

    Road Test: 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

It is unquestionably new, yet still unmistakably a Beetle. But, while the original came from humble pre-Second World War beginnings, going on to achieve iconic status and sell more than 21 million units worldwide over 75 years, there is nothing overtly proletariat about the newest take on the “people’s car.”
